Ask the Vet…
Question: Is it true that birds need vaccines?
Answer: Yes, your pet bird needs to be vaccinated to protect it from common diseases. Just as our dogs and cats need vaccines, so do our pet birds.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 2 viruses that commonly make parrots ill:
Polyoma virus & Pacheco’s herpes virus.
Even if your bird lives in your house and isn’t near other birds,
the viruses can be transmitted

on objects, such as clothing,

boosters at first, then
yearly boosters.

Beware of Poisons
Unfortunately more than half of the toys sold for our pet birds have a toxic part in them.
The most common source of poison are the metals copper and zinc. Copper bird toys are usually sold as bells. Toxic zinc is harder to identify in toys. Most forms of toxic zinc are galvanized metal “C” clamps and wires, lava rock, dyed leather, keys and soft rubber toys. If a bird chews on a toxic toy, it can become seriously ill. Signs of illness are lethargy, loose droppings, bright green droppings, and sometimes incoordination.

If you suspect your bird has chewed on a toxic toy, there is a test for zinc and copper as well as several treatments.

Rabbits:
Our love for these pets

Rabbits can be excellent pets. Many pet rabbits are affectionate and playful. Keeping a rabbit as a house pet is similar to a house cat. Rabbits have the benefit of being clean and quiet.
Rabbits need to eat a Timothy hay based pellet, such as Oxbow Bunny Basics. Unfortunately, alfalfa pellets can lead to health problems. Hay is also an important part of their daily diet. Rabbit teeth grow constantly and are prone to growing too long. Providing safe branches for them to gnaw on will help wear their teeth down. Rabbits love to chew, so it is important to make sure they can not get to electrical wires and other household hazards.
